Safer Communities

In Blackpool significant achievements have been made through the Community Safety and Drugs Partnership, over the last three years to reduce crime and disorder.  While burglary and auto crime have fallen significantly, the MORI survey (2004) showed that residents still have strong negative feelings about crime and safety.   Therefore a crucial issue is to reduce people's fear of crime.  To have safer communities is important - it is what the residents of Blackpool say they want and what the partners involved in the LSP can help to achieve.

Negotiated Actions
(the priorities being worked on for everyone's benefit)

 Protecting Vulnerable Adults

We have a large population of older people in Blackpool and a larger than average population of people with a limiting long-term illness and disabilities (census 2001).  A number of individuals and organisations support and care for these people and their carers, many others have contact with them.  It is important to make sure that all these organisations have training for their staff and procedures for protecting vulnerable adults.

This action will develop a framework of training, identification and prevention policies that will raise awareness and protect vulnerable adults from abuse.

 Youth  Access

Surveys and interaction through projects like 'Reassurance', have shown that residents feel concerned about young people "hanging around".  Whilst there is a perception that young people in Blackpool have the advantages of a seaside resort on their doorstep, the facilities are focused on young people on holiday and not those who live here.  By investing in your services, activities and facilities the positive effects on people's feelings of safety will be combined with the beneficial impact on young people themselves.  This action will look at innovative ways to extend youth provision, from providing space in existing buildings to extending activities that are already happening.

These actions will offer more opportunities for young people to be involved positively in their communities.

 Communities Against Drugs

In Blackpool excellent work has occurred around drug treatment, which has reduced crime.  However neighbourhood perception of drug misuse remains high.  Drug misuse can vastly affect local communities, making people feel unsafe in their local neighbourhoods and impacting on the local environment.  National government guidance suggests that all neighbourhood regeneration should address drug misuse and its negative impacts.

This action will roll out a community against drugs approach linked to the Revoe Reassurance project.  This will enable local people to report issues simply and be aware of the response that will happen.
