Updated 19 September 2006. Always check the website for the latest version of this page. Visitors to Blackpool4Me will view your pages on computers using different browsers and screen settings. This means that you cannot assume that your page will look the same to them as it does to you.
The main problems lie with the way computers handle "blocks" of information on your pages, which could be sections of text that you have pasted in, or images that are too large for the page.
You can help your visitors by
a) re-formatting any text that you paste into your pages. See Template tools for more information.
b) following these guidelines as to the size of any images in your pages.
Recommended image sizes
- in the Homepage template, keep both the "channel logo" and the "main image" to a maximum of 150 pixels wide.
- in the Events and News page templates keep the summary image to a maximum of 100 pixels wide, and any images in the main content to 350 pixels wide.
- in the Content pages keep both the main image and any images in the main content to 350 pixels wide.
Re-sizing your images
How you re-size your images will depend on what tools you have available on your computer.
Using Image Resizer
Image Resizer is the last option on the Edit Console. You can use it to reduce the size of the images you want to add to your pages.
- Click Image Resizer on the Edit Console
- Hit the Browse button to find the image you want to use, and then the Upload Image button to bring it into the Image Resizer
- You will see displayed the current size of your image. Enter new dimensions and hit the Resize Image button
- Your resized image is displayed. Hit the Save Image button to save it back to your computer (a different folder?) ready for you to find and add to your page using the Image Manager tool
Using Paint
- right-click on the image or its filename, choose Open With, and then Microsoft Paint
- from the toolbar click on Image and then Attributes. Tnis will tell you the current size of the image.
- from the toolbar click on Image and then Stretch/Skew. Change the size of your image by entering figures in the Horizontal and Vertical fields under the Stretch heading, and click OK.
- from the toolbar click on File and then Save to replace your original image, or File and then Save As to save the re-sized image separately from your original.
Using a graphics program
You can follow a similar process by using the graphics program that came with your digital camera or scanner.
Using the Pix Resizer
This is a free, easy-to-use program that you can download to your computer. See the page
Handling Images in Windows for more information.
