What is an Operating System?
The operating system of a computer is the software that the rest of the software depends on to make the computer functional.
On most PCs this is Windows or the Macintosh OS. Unix and Linux are other operating systems often found, often in scientific and technical environments, although their use is growing more widely.
The choice?
The choice of operating system for most purcahsers of computers is limited to the latest versions of Windows or Macintosh. As the chart above shows, the most popular operating system by far is Windows XP, although there may be a number of versions of Windows is use at any one time.
Do I need an Operating System?
More importantly do you need to know what an operating system does? All computers need an operating system, so the answer to 'Do I need?' is certainly "Yes".
There are many differences between operating systms, and some are known for being better at some things than others. Certainly you should look carefully at what others are doing and saying, and you should consider your needs carefully. This is the subject of a further article to follow,
The advice is simple. Ask others and begin to formulate the pro's and cons. DO NOT rule out any options.
