Family Learning

Introduction
Family Learning describes a whole range of activities and programmes where parents, carers, grandparents and children are involved in learning. Sometimes it involves the adult and children learning together, sometimes it involves parents or carers learning about how to help and support their children, both in school and in the home.

Family programmes can be divided into three main areas:

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy (FLLN)

These courses complement the National Literacy Strategy, the National Numeracy Strategy and the Skills for Life Strategy. They are targeted at families with poor literacy and numeracy skills, designed to break the generational cycle of underachievement. These families tend to have fewer advantages and less support with their learning and development than those in other households. There are opportunities for parents and children to learn both separately and together.

Children who have been involved in family literacy and numeracy programmes have demonstrated dramatic improvements in their skills

Intergenerational Family Learning

These courses encourage children and adults to learn together, sharing ideas, planning and making choices. These included a wide range of engagement activities and short courses covering ICT, Arts & Crafts, Languages or Healthy Living. These courses are flexible and can be designed to meet the needs and interests of the learners.

Parenting Skills

Blackpool Adult and Community Learning also runs parenting courses that can be designed to meet the needs of parents or can focus on specific groups such as fathers.

Other Courses

Our range of courses is extended through our partnerships with other Blackpool Council providers.
