National Year of Reading continues in Blackpool’s libraries

The National Year of Reading continues in Blackpool libraries with some great activities and events taking place this month.

Rhythm and Rhyme

To support the month's theme of "Rhythm and Rhyme", first year fashion and clothing students from Blackpool and Fylde College have been working on a Poetry in Fashion installation that is now being displayed at Central library.

The students were given a selection of poems relating to garments, or narratives that engaged fashion or accessories, and their task was to create sculptural paper garments from a limited colour and fabric palette. The results are amazing and are on display throughout July – and have already had many positive comments from visitors.

Calling all Dr. Who fans!

Blackpool libraries will be holding a "Dr Who month" commencing on Saturday 19 July and running until 16 August. There will be a "Dr Who Extravaganza" at Central Library on Saturday 26 July, from 10am – 4pm, with activities for children and adults.

There will be craft sessions for children running throughout the day; a library trail and a quiz for adults every hour run by a Cyberman!

Have your 'photo taken with a Dalek; guess the Dr Who artefact or join in the fancy dress parade - take your pick! For further details of the day, call Central library on 01253 478080, or ask at your local branch for details of their Dr. Who events.

Team Reads

Once again, Blackpool libraries are supporting the Summer Reading Challenge and this year it has a sporting theme. Team Reads kicks off tomorrow (July 5) and children and young people can sign up at any Blackpool library. Participants need to read six books to complete the Challenge and there are attractive prizes to be won along the way. Residents can find out more information at any Blackpool library.
