DID YOU KNOW?
In 1933, Blackpool was to have Britain's first skyscraper, to be called the "Sun Ray Hotel".
The building was to be set back in tiers from bottom to top, which would allow flood lighting to play an important role. The 'sun ball' at the top would be lit with bright orange rays, and reflected light would appear through the slots in the square section below the ball. Directly behind these slots were to be water tanks for the building's water supply.
The total height of the building was to be 511 feet - roughly the height of Blackpool Tower, and the 'sun ball' itself was planned to be 27 feet 6 inches in diameter.
In case you hadn't guessed, it was never built!
