COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS - SPRING 2008

Hi everyone!

We had an excellent Christmas party for all our luncheon club folk who thoroughly enjoyed the festivities which included pressies, entertainment, beautiful food and, of course, Santa! All that is a distant, but happy memory, now and time for new things to start happening!

I have undergone NVQ4 training in Advice and Guidance which allows me to deliver Advice and Guidance as a service in the Centre. We were also aiming to become MATRIX accredited; this is a national recognised standard which shows that the services we deliver are of the highest quality. In December 2007 we had our assessment to become MATRIX accredited, and I was delighted as we passed with flying colours!!

We were extremely fortunate to secure funds for a brand new State of the Art computer suite which has been installed into one of our existing meeting rooms. The suite consists of 12 computers which very cleverly sink down into the table, leaving a huge conference table, so the room is now dual purpose! The monies have been granted to us from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF). I applied for funds from them with the help of Alan Cavill, to whom I must say a massive "Thank You".

We have a 'drop in' session on Wednesday afternoons from 1 pm until 3pm for anyone who would like to use our computers free of charge; maybe to learn something specific, or to explore the world of computing. We have mentors on site from Lancaster University that are here to help you if and when necessary.

We aim to have a basic computer course and ECDL training starting soon, so if you're interested pop in and see me.

I submitted a bid to the Church Urban Fund, and I am happy to say we were successful, and have secured £10,000 from them for assistance with staff salaries, so thank you very much.

We continue to provide our Social Club on Mondays and the Gentle Exercise Class and Luncheon Club on Fridays, and we are looking to provide some form of activity on a Friday afternoon after lunch as the Derby and Joan Club has now finished. If you have any ideas or suggestions of what you would like to see please let us know by emailing us.

As you can probably see we have started 2008 with a bang! Long may this continue, and we look forward to even more success throughout the year.

Everyone is welcome at the Claremont First Step Centre, so come and have a look round and see what we have to offer, or just come in to have a chat and a cup of tea.

It would be great to see you!

Little Steps Playgroup

We are taking part in the Sainsburys Active Kids 2008 project. If you shop at Sainsburys, we would be grateful if you could support us by asking for the vouchers at the till. There is a collecting box in the Church lounge.

We are still looking for volunteers to help in the playgroup in various ways. CRB clearance will be needed, but we can arrange that.

At present Little Steps is open, during term-time, for 10 sessions a week - from Monday to Friday 9.00 - 12 noon and 12.45pm - 3.45pm.
