Quality Education and Training

In order for people to have higher incomes, good health and an overall better quality of life, education and training has to be a priority. This needs to focus on giving people the skills they need, and can use, in their lives. We are being creative in making better use of what the town has to offer, bridging the gap between schools and communities.

Co-ordination of Information, Advice & Guidance
Developing one approach to information, advice and guidance. Incorporating training, a directory and working more closely with parents and teachers to give a better understanding of the opportunities in Blackpool and beyond. It will improve the numbers of 16 year olds and over in employment, education and training, and support our young people to make better life choices.

Employment of Vulnerable Young People
Many of the 16-19 year olds not in employment, education or training are from vulnerable groups; teenage mothers, children leaving care and children supervised by the Youth Offending Team. Many of these vulnerable people need individualised support to enter employment, education and training. We aim to employ more of these young people within the public sector giving them support and training.

Supporting Vulnerable Families
A number of families experience multiple needs including poor housing, poor health and a lack of employment. Currently the public and voluntary sectors interact with these families but not always addressing all the issues. A more co-ordinated approach should provide a service where educational attainment, aspirations and long-term prosperity improve for these families. More holistic support will mean needs are more effectively met and ultimately life chances will improve.

Skills for Life
A large number of people have no qualifications meaning that some families have lower aspirations or are unable to support their children in acheiving at school. We will work with employers to identify people who could benefit from additional training around skills for life.

Communities into Schools
Young people at school need a variety of teaching methods and different ways of engaging, to get the most out of learning. Schools can benefit by being more involved in the local community to promote understanding and build relationships. Young people can gain skills and experience by learning about different topics and interacting with community members. We will develop community champions who can interact with young people in schools.
