MP Welcomes Government's New Welfare Reform Package

Blackpool North and Fleetwood MP, Joan Humble, a member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee has welcomed the statement by the Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions on Welfare Reform.

Mrs Humble questioned James Purnell the Secretary of State, in the House of Commons, when he made the statement on Monday 21st July 2008.

Mrs Humble added:

"I welcomed the Government's strategy to support people into work and out of poverty. But I did ask the Secretary of State how his new plans could help those with multiple barriers to work. One individual could be a lone parent, disabled, from a minority ethnic community and have no academic qualifications. All of these aspects of that individual need to be taken together to make sure the right support is given. It will be especially important to provide good quality child care and skills training.

But this is the right way forward - helping people into work and supporting those who can never work".
