Biography


Joan had previously enjoyed wide experience of Local Government, being a Lancashire County Councillor from 1985 - 1997. During this period, she was Chair of Lancashire Social Services Committee for seven years from 1990 - 1997.

At Westminster, Joan is a Member of the Work and Pensions Select Committee and is also Chair of several All-Party Parliamentary Groups - the APPG Childcare, APPG Social Care, APPG on Myodil and APPG Army Deaths; Co-Chair APP Universities Group; Chair of the Back-bench DCMS Group of Labour MP's since 2005; Vice Chair APPG Autism and APPG Tourism. Joan has been the Secretary of the North West Group of MP's since 1998.

Joan Humble has demonstrated a strong interest and commitment to improving the lives of disabled children and their families. As a result of this interest in June 2006 Joan, together with the Rt Hon Tom Clarke MP, was invited by Government Ministers to lead fellow Parliamentarians in a review of services for disabled children and their families. Joan Humble had previously been a Civil Servant, first in the then Department of Health and Social Security, and later the Inland Revenue. She is a Justice of the Peace and has been President of Blackpool Advocacy since 1997.
