The SHIVER Project

Background
A ‘Needs Assessment’ survey was undertaken in Blackpool in 2005. As a result, the SHIVER service has been developed for people living with and affected by HIV in the Blackpool area.
Our philosophy
This service aims to promote healthier lifestyles, both physically and emotionally,, provide personal development opportunities and reduce isolation and discrimination, to enable people to better live with their diagnosis, enjoying present life and planning for the future.
The approach taken is holistic and person-centred, focusing on individual need and personal situations.
Respect for the community, empathy for the individual and genuineness from the service providers are the founding philosophies of this service, with a view to encouraging self-confidence and personal empowerment.
We aim to provide a friendly, accessible service that is sensitive to the needs of the service users.

What support can we offer?
Immediate support on diagnosis: Someone to listen to your immediate needs and concerns.
Befriending service: A trained worker will support your personal welfare and help you develop and use your own resources.
Counselling: Helping you come to terms with what you are living through and empower you to make any necessary changes in your life.
Group support: Mutual support, with the chance to ask questions and raise your awareness of issues that matter to you.
Complementary therapies: A holistic way of relieving depression, anxiety and insomnia, and building up the body’s natural defences against stress.
Opportunities for volunteers: Meet people, gain accredited qualifications and increase your self-esteem.
Signposting to other agencies: Referral to other services that may also be able to help you
