Bloomfield Bear leading the way

Bloomfield Bear and Councillor Kath Rowson with some of the pupils
Wednesday 23rd May 2007
I was invited to join staff, parents and pupils from Bispham Endowed Primary School on their first WOW (Walk on Wednesdays) this morning. Bloomfield Bear and Radio Wave also accompanied us as we set off from Sainsbury’s at 8.30am and enjoyed the fine weather as we walked to the school.
WOW is a campaign designed to reduce the number of children who are driven to school regularly and increase the amount of physical activity children take in their every day lives. Schools are being encouraged to promote WOW to parents and pupils to encourage more people to get out of their cars, change habits and help to keep children healthy and safer. Blackpool started the scheme after the Easter Holidays, and it has been encouraging to see so many taking part.
Everyone said how much they'd enjoyed the walk and I hope that 'WOW' becomes a regular event in as many schools as possible in Blackpool. As well as encouraging healthy exercise and providing the opportunity to teach children road safety, it also greatly reduces the number of cars on the road at "school run" time. It's a simple idea, but it does so much to help physical fitness, road safety and the environment!
