Stanley Park Regeneration
The successful partnership of The Friends of Stanley Park and Blackpool Council is transforming the town's favourite Park. Their hard work is already starting to make a difference.
The £5Million rejuvenation programme will take two and a half years to complete but, when finished, will preserve this ‘Jewel in Blackpool’s Horticultural Crown’ as a legacy for future generations.
Mainly funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund, a key aim of the project has been to create a park that people of all generations want and need, and which embraces both the past and the future. The restored park will, therefore, contain some exciting new facilities that complement the original design philosophy.
The first major phase, which started in the Italian Gardens (pictured above before work started), is nearly complete. The area has been transformed with new drainage and new pathways and improved disabled access. The fountain in the centre is also being restored with new sculptures added. The final touches will be the soft landscaping with new plants and edging introduced.
The second phase of work started in April 2007 and includes restoration of the Rose Garden and Remembrance Garden.
The new Visitors Centre is completed, and has proved to be very popular.
Update August 2007
Work is under way to give Stanley Park’s toilet facilities their very own share of regeneration.
There will be refurbished toilets at the main car park to bring the current facilities up to standard, and new public toilets are currently being built into the Tennis Court Pavilion in the centre of the park. This will provide much needed facilities in an area of the park currently without toilets.
It’s expected that the pavilion toilets will be completed this summer, and the main toilets should be open in the autumn.
