Updates

Your Councillors regularly consult residents on what they feel is needed, and continually fight for improvements to the area. Just a few of their recent successes in the two areas that have most concerned residents are:

Road Safety

* Following the request from Kath Rowson in our Summer 2006 newsletter, the potholes, resurfacing and other outstanding repairs reported to her by residents have now been completed.

* “20 is Plenty” signs have been erected on roads where residents had complained of excessive speeds by motorists.

* School zone “20 is plenty” signs incorporating pictures designed by Kincraig School pupils have been ordered. Posters warning of the dangers of speeding, also designed by Kincraig School pupils, have been distributed to the Technical College and businesses in the area.

* Police now undertake regular speed checks on Ashfield Road and Kincraig Road.

Litter

* Kath Rowson is organising a Rubbish Amnesty which will take place over two consecutive Saturdays this spring. Residents will be able to take all rubbish, including white goods, to designated points for free removal. This will be held in the North of the Ward, and if it is successful Kath will organise further events in other locations.

* The Police and members of the NEAT Team now undertake “litter patrols” in areas where there is a problem. They have fined a number of people for fly tipping and dropping litter.

Postal Voting

Nearly a quarter of people in Blackpool have already indicated that they would like to vote by post, either for the first time or because it has been convenient for them in previous elections. They realise that postal voting is a quick, easy and safe way of making sure that their vote counts.

Due to recent changes in the law, both existing and new postal voters are required to complete a new application form. If you wish to vote by post in the Local Elections this May, your completed application form must arrive at the Town Hall no later than 5pm on Wednesday 18th April 2007.

For further information, contact the Elections Office on Blackpool 477161.

Increased Free Childcare in Blackpool

Blackpool Council were successful in their bid to be one of 18 pilot authorities to receive a grant for the extension to the nursery and education grant for all three and four year olds. This will increase the free early education entitlement from 12.5 to 15 hours a week. Parents can use the time flexibly over a minimum of three days a week.

Excellent Report for Blackpool Council

Blackpool’s Labour run Council has been recognised as a 3 star authority that is “improving strongly” in the independent Audit Commission’s annual Comprehensive Performance Assessment. This is just one step away from the highest possible rating of 4 stars. The report recognises the hard work and achievements of your Councillors and Council Officers, and disproves the misinformation that is being spread by people indulging in petty politics.
