Simon leads calls for inquiry into Fire Safety

Following a visit to the tragic scenes of yesterdays house fire on Laycock Gate, Simon has met with Blackpool Coastal Housing to request a review of Fire Safety in the maisonettes.

"Firstly, can I extend my condolences to the families of those who died in yesterdays fire.  This is the type of event we read about daily in the newspapers, but which shocks and horrifies us when it happens so close to home.  Several residents have expressed concern about fire escape facilities in these properties, following yesterday's tragedy.  Having been to view the scene myself today, I have asked that Blackpool Coastal Housing organize a reassurance campaign, in conjunction with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.  I have asked that each home is visited, and that an individual assessment is made of the needs of each resident.  Whilst I am told that the properties comply with Health & Safety standards, there may be people with specific mobility problems, small children, or other issues which mean that in the event of a fire, their escape routes could be compromised.  Both I and the local residents need to feel reassured that steps have been taken to ensure that their homes are as safe as it is possible for them to be."

"I have been given assurances tonight, that such a piece of work will be carried out, and I look forward to hearing the outcome of these consultations.  If people have any immediate concerns, I would urge them to contact Blackpool Coastal Housing, via the local housing office, or to contact Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service for general fire safety information.
