Getting their robes in a twist!

Normally, in politics, August is known as the 'Silly Season' - in Blackpool however, we are already well into November and it's getting sillier by the day.  The new Tory Council have decided that one of the biggest problems facing this town is.... the fact that some Mayors don't like wearing robes.

Incredible.

I (like almost everyone else I've spoken too) couldn't care less if the Mayor wears robes!  Our current Mayor, Councillor Wynne, has spent almost £2000 of his own money on a set of robes, and very dashing he looks in them.  Personally, I wouldn't wear them because:

  1. I'd feel silly
  2. I'd look silly
  3. I think a decent suit and the very impressive chain of office looks more dignified
  4. Long, flowing, expensive mock 17th Century robes are a sign of rank and privilege that I don't feel comfortable with
  5. Nobody (not even a Tory Council) should be able to force anybody (not even the Mayor) to wear anything!  It's against their Human Rights!
  6. It's a disgraceful waste of our money
But, it appears that the Tories are keen to buy another set and make future mayors dress up in them!  Maybe once they've done that they will have time to look at our schools, roads, houses, bins etc?
