John Jones for Stanley Ward

Reproduced below is the message I posted about my friend and colleague, John Jones, when he fought the Stanley Ward By-Election in 2009.  Sadly, John missed out on the seat by only 46 votes (which was still a tremendous acheivement given the fact that the Tories had got used to winning it by a massive majority).  John has continued his work in Stanley Ward, and continued to expose the weasel words of the local Tory Party, and their crocodile tears over Kensington Developments plans to build 600+ house in the area ( plans which Tory Councillors from Blackpool North managed to force through the Planning process a few weeks ago, despite massive local opposition).

I hope that John will agree to be the Labour Party candidate in Stanley Ward again, as I am confident that given the shambolic state of the Tories in the area, and his great ability as a campaigner and advocate for local people, he will be returned to the Town Hall in May of 2011, and will provide the people of Stanley Ward and Marton Moss with the strong voice they currently lack.

Hi there,

I’m writing as a fellow resident of Stanley Ward where there is shortly to be a very important election.

On Thursday 20th August, voters in this area will be asked to decide who they want to represent them in Blackpool Town Hall for the next couple of years.

Traditionally, the Tory party win this seat by a large margin, but this time, it’s going to be close.  I’ve noticed a sea-change in levels of support for the parties when I’ve been campaigning on the doorstep, but I need your help to secure a ground-breaking victory for people-power here in Stanley Ward.

The Tory Council in Blackpool have let the people of this town down in so many ways I don’t know where to start.  Look around you.  Look at the state of the roads, look at the weeds, look for the litter bins (it might take you a while to find one!)  Listen to the cars being driven around our roads, and up and down Squires Gate Lane at incredible speeds.

Their latest madcap scheme is to build hundreds (if not thousands) of homes on Marton Moss (one of the very view remaining ‘green and pleasant’ parts of Blackpool), not only will this lead to an oversupply of houses (and affect the value of your property), it will destroy, forever, one of the most historic parts of our town.

I live on Lowfield Road, and this isn’t what I want for our area.  I want a local councillor who will fight for our area, in the same way that I fight for my constituents in Brunswick Ward.

The choice you have on 20th August is between an array of people you’ve probably never heard of, most of whom have little empathy with this area.

My friend and colleague, John Jones, who I am proud to have proposed as the Labour Party Candidate, has worked here, on Highfield Road, in our local MP’s office, and prior to that, in his newsagents shop, for many years.  John knows the area, is well known in the area, and is committed to serving the people of the area.  He will campaign vigorously against huge building projects in the area.  He will fight your corner at the Town Hall.  He will give you the voice that you have lacked for so long.

Those of you who know me will know that I work in a certain way, promising only what I can deliver, and working as hard as I can to deliver the results which my constituents want and deserve.

Only one candidate on the ballot paper here in Stanley Ward can do this.  I urge you to join me in supporting the candidacy of John Jones, saving Stanley Ward from the usual Tory walkover, and saving the Moss from the relentless sprawl of development.

Thanks for reading this, and thanks for your support.

Simon Blackburn, Labour Councillor for Brunswick Ward
