Roy Fisher

Former leader Roy Fisher
A few weeks ago a Conservative councillor described Roy Fisher, the Labour candidate in the recent Park Ward by-election, as a 'failed leader and defeated Layton councillor' in the letters pages of a local paper. What happened to being magnanimous in victory. Does she not realise that most of her senior Tory colleagues have at some point in their political careers been defeated in elections too.

I would just like to say that as leader of the council Roy helped to bring millions of pounds worth of investment into the town.

Roy Fisher did lose his seat at the elections a year ago but they say that you find the true standing of a person not in victory but in defeat. At the election count last year Roy was devastated by his defeat, you could see he was hurting inside but he continued to support his colleagues during their counts, whether they themselves were successful or not. Compare this to a former Conservative leader a few years before who on losing her seat ran out of the count crying, leaving her colleagues to fend for themselves.

Roy showed true leadership last year when part of his world fell apart. I hope that one day Roy will again be sitting on the Labour benches in the town hall and I for one will be proud and honoured to sit with him.
