The PEEP programme:
- is for parents and carers and their children from birth to five years
- offers ideas and activities to support children's learning in everyday situations
- is a combination of different activities e.g. stories, songs and craft activities, to be used by parents/ carers and children at home or as part of a group
- focuses on how to make the most of everyday life – listening, talking, playing, singing, sharing books - and having fun!
- is about supporting children’s self-esteem and helping children feel good about learning
- supports parents and carers in their role as educators, as well as promoting their own learning
What happens at a PEEP group?
PEEP aims to support families with their children's early learning in an enjoyable way. Groups are for parents/ carers (including child minders) and their child.
PEEP group sessions tend to include most of the following:
- a focus from the Learning Together folder (e.g. 'Babies making choices' or 'Living with television')
- songs and rhymes
- a story time
- activities for the children
- a talking time for adults (to share experiences and ideas)
- book-sharing and the opportunity to borrow books and play packs (or info about where and how to do so)
- scrap materials available for families to take home and make things
Adults do not need to read or write during a PEEP group (or even talk or sing if they would prefer not to).
PEEP groups are:
- held at Claremont West Family Centre
- run by a group leader and an assistant or co-leader
- run for about an hour, once a week
- attended by up to a dozen families free
The groups may be:
- for everyone living locally with a baby or young child, or may be for families with particular interests or needs
- for families with children at one age level (e.g. two year olds), or may include children from a range of ages (from birth to five)
For everyone's protection and comfort, we have group ground rules. These are discussed and decided on by the group at the start of each term
