A relationship between two individuals which is initiated, supported and monitored

The relationship is non-judgmental, mutual, purposeful and there is a commitment over time.

Young parents aged upto 25 may be supported by Volunteer befrienders. The relationship is initiated, supported and monitored by Claremont West Family Centre.

At present due to funding the young parents must be living in the following wards:

Claremont, Talbot and Brunswick, Revoe and Bloomfield.

Claremont West Family Centre is a registered charity 1100535.

We are member of the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation and presently working towards APS standard. We are also members of

The Befriending Network (Scotland)

What does a volunteer befriender do?

• Enhance young parents abilities to achieve a more sustainable lifestyle and to successfully negotiate the process of parenthood

• Reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation

• Identify and support young parents to work towards achievable goals

• Assist young parents in improving their social skills and develop social networks

What is expected of Befrienders.

• A befriender is asked to give between 2-3hours per week to the project.

• All befrienders are asked to supply a reference and also have a CRB disclosure.

All befrienders also attend compulsory initial training for two days and have regular opportunity for other training.

What would be expected of a young parent supported

• Meet when agreed

• Listen and be honest

• Ask questions to ensure understanding

• Seek and provide information as relevant

• Maintain confidentiality

• Set targets and goals to achieve

• Review progress / continuation of the befriending with regular review meetings with project co-ordinator.
