2006 SCHOOLS POETRY COMPETITION

On the evening of the 11th July, Cleveleys Writers held their 5th annual poetry prize giving event at the hosting school Anchorsholme Primary. The event was a culmination of hard work by the pupils and staff of the partaking schools in the  catchment area and this year it was our unenviable task of a panel of judges from Cleveleys Writers to select the winning entries from such a large amount of entrants in this popular school poetry competition. This year three subjects were given from which the entrants could choose, the subjects being, THE KESTREL, MONEY and BULLYING.
On the night, Pamela as the competition co-ordinator did a wonderful job of making each of the entrants feel at ease.  Pam chaired the presentation with nineteen from the hundred plus entrants reading their entries.

After a short interval for refreshments the prize giving took place on the stage at Ancholsholme Primary. A tie for the third prize occurred with Marie Bennett of Northfold School and Abigail Cartwright of Ancholsholme Primary both submitting excellent work titled ‘The Kestrel’. The third prizes of five pound book tokens were presented to Abigail and Marie by Norman Johnson.

The 2nd prize of a ten pound book token was presented by Don Wright to Kyle Fisher of Norbreck School for his entry of ‘My Money’. The entry gave a real childlike view of riches with an expression of how he would spread his wealth.

Finally Victoria presented a fifteen pound book token as first prize to Megan Luckett of Manor Beach School for her poetic entry ‘Bullying’ that gave a different standpoint on the subject. Megan had written about a bully regretting his actions and feeling remorse.

In addition to the book tokens each winner received a named scroll and a copy of an anthology of poems compiled by Cleveleys Writers. The anthology titled ‘At Ease ~ Its only Poetry’ was the latest edition in a series of anthologies produced by the group.

Finally Malcolm Brocklehurst the Chairman of Cleveleys Writers presented an engraved shield to Megan Luckett as the representative from Manor Beach school.  The shield will be held by the winning school for one year.
